Frequently Asked Questions
Will I definitely see a shark?2025-05-12T15:40:01+02:00

Shark sightings are not guaranteed, as we operate in the wild ocean environment and work with animals in their natural habitat. That said, Gansbaai is one of the best places in the world to see sharks.

This region is a natural aggregation site, just a 15-minute boat ride from Kleinbaai Harbour, where shark activity is consistently high — particularly for bronze whaler sharks, which we see year-round.

While nature never offers certainty, our team’s experience and local knowledge ensure we give you the best possible chance of an unforgettable encounter.

What types of sharks will I see in Gansbaai?2025-05-12T15:44:31+02:00

Our most common sightings include bronze whaler sharks (also known as copper sharks) and broadnose sevengill sharks. While great white sightings have declined in recent years due to environmental changes, they are still possible — especially in winter months from mid-May to end July.

Can I book transport from Cape Town, and is it included in the price?2025-05-12T15:51:28+02:00

Yes! We offer door-to-door return transport from Cape Town. It’s optional and can be added when booking. It’s not included in the dive price but is discounted during our winter specials.

Are there still great white sharks in Gansbaai?2025-05-12T15:45:04+02:00

Yes, although sightings are rarer than in the past. Their numbers have declined in the area due to natural changes like orca predation and ongoing human impact on marine ecosystems.

Peak months for possible sightings are May to July.

As part of our mission, we actively contribute to shark research and conservation, helping raise awareness about their behaviour, threats, and the importance of protecting them. Even when great whites aren’t present, Gansbaai remains one of the most active shark diving locations in the world, with regular sightings of bronze whaler sharks and other marine life.

What happens if there are no shark sightings on the day?2025-05-12T15:45:35+02:00

While we can’t offer refunds for no sightings — as we work with wild animals in their natural environment — we always strive to deliver an unforgettable marine experience.

If sharks aren’t spotted on your trip, our crew will take you on a scenic tour around Dyer Island, where you’ll get to see Cape fur seals, seabirds, and learn about shark behaviour, marine ecosystems, and our conservation efforts.

In the event of no shark sightings, you’ll receive a No-Shark Voucher, valid for 2 years, which allows you to return for another trip free of charge. The only cost that will apply is transport, should you choose to make use of it.

Is shark cage diving safe?2025-05-12T15:46:10+02:00

Yes. We’ve been doing this for over 26 years with a flawless safety record. Our crew is highly experienced, our equipment is top-notch, and your safety is our first priority on every trip.

Do I need to know how to swim or dive?2025-05-12T15:46:32+02:00

Nope! No swimming or diving experience is required. You’ll be in a secure cage attached to the boat and guided the whole way. We’ve had guests from all walks of life take the plunge!

What’s the difference between standard and hookah cage diving?2025-05-12T15:46:57+02:00

Standard cage diving uses breath-holding and snorkel masks.
Hookah diving uses onboard air supply so you can breathe underwater the whole time — no certification required. It allows for longer, more immersive cage time.

Is there a minimum age or fitness level to participate?2025-05-12T15:47:17+02:00

Participants must be at least 12 years old for diving. Viewing-only trips are open to all ages. A general level of mobility is required for boarding the boat, and we’ll guide you every step of the way.

Can I join the trip without getting into the cage?2025-05-12T15:47:35+02:00

Absolutely. Our Viewing-Only option lets you stay dry while enjoying all the action from the boat. You’ll still see sharks up close and be part of the experience and our upper viewing deck gives excellent views of the shark activity which takes place on the surface.

You can wear contact lenses under your mask. Glasses won’t fit in the diving mask, but we’ll do our best to accommodate you if needed — let us know in advance.

Are shark cage dives ethical or harmful to sharks?2025-05-12T15:49:59+02:00

We are fully permitted, conservation-driven, and deeply respectful of sharks. Our practices are non-invasive, educational, and designed to raise awareness and protect these apex predators.

Is the water very cold? Will I be warm enough?2025-05-12T15:50:43+02:00

The water can be chilly (especially in winter), but we provide thick wetsuits, hoods, and booties. Our team will help you gear up and warm you up with hot drinks afterward.

How far in advance should I book? Do trips run year-round?2025-05-12T15:51:03+02:00

Trips run year-round, but winter offers amazing conditions and fewer crowds. Booking at least a few days in advance is recommended, especially for hookah diving or transport.

Can you accommodate guests with physical disabilities?2025-05-12T15:51:48+02:00

Yes, we do our best to accommodate guests with physical disabilities, and have successfully catered to many individuals with varying mobility needs in the past.

Our team is experienced, patient, and committed to making the experience as safe and enjoyable as possible. If you or a guest in your group has specific requirements, we recommend getting in touch with us in advance so we can assess needs individually and make the necessary arrangements.

We’ll always do everything we can to help you have a comfortable and memorable marine adventure.

What conservation work does your organisation do to benefit the sharks?2025-05-12T15:52:08+02:00

We are deeply committed to the conservation, research, and protection of sharks in South Africa.

Through the Shark & Marine Research Institute, our team works year-round to:

  • Conduct long-term monitoring of local shark populations
  • Collect and analyse data on shark behaviour, movement, and habitat use
  • Support ethical tag-and-release initiatives
  • Educate the public and volunteers about the importance of sharks in ocean health
  • Collaborate with schools and international researchers to promote marine awareness

Every tour directly supports our research and outreach efforts. When you dive with us, you’re not just experiencing something unforgettable — you’re also helping to protect sharks for future generations.
