Your first shark cage dive should feel exciting, not intimidating

Shark Cage Diving for Beginners: If you have never been shark cage diving before, you are exactly where most of our guests begin. You do not need a diving qualification, previous experience or any special training. We explain everything before the boat leaves, provide the equipment you need and guide you through the experience step by step.

It is completely normal to feel a little nervous. Sharks are powerful wild animals, the ocean can feel unfamiliar and the words “shark diving” sound far more extreme than the experience often feels. Once guests are settled on the boat and understand how the cage works, those nerves usually turn into excitement very quickly.

Our job is not to rush you into the water. It is to help you feel informed, comfortable and ready, and to give you an honest, memorable encounter with the wildlife of the Dyer Island ecosystem.

Do I need scuba certification?

No. You do not need scuba certification for either of our cage diving options.

Our standard cage experience takes place at the surface. When it is your turn, our crew will tell you when a shark is approaching and in which direction to look. You hold your breath, lower your face beneath the water and watch through the cage.

If you would prefer to breathe normally while viewing the sharks, you can choose our air-supplied cage diving option. Air is supplied from the boat, so you can remain underwater for longer viewing periods without carrying a scuba cylinder. No previous diving experience is required, and our trained crew will show you how to use the equipment.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You do not need to be an experienced swimmer. The cage is secured alongside the boat and you remain inside it throughout the dive. There is no swimming away from the vessel and no open-water diving.
You should, however, be reasonably comfortable around water and able to follow the crew’s instructions. If you are anxious, tell us before your cage rotation. We would much rather take a little extra time to help you than have you feel pressured.

What if I decide I don’t want to enter the cage?

That is absolutely fine. Our viewing-only option allows you to join the full trip and watch the sharks from the boat. The above-water viewing can be excellent, and you will still experience the journey, wildlife, marine commentary and atmosphere onboard.

Some guests book as viewers from the start. Others wait until they see the cage and decide on the day. Either way, there is no embarrassment and no pressure. The experience belongs to you.

What happens on the day?

Your experience begins at our premises in Kleinbaai, Gansbaai, where you will receive refreshments and a full safety briefing before boarding. We explain the weather and sea conditions, what wildlife has recently been seen, how the cage rotations work and what to expect once we reach the dive site.

After launching, the skipper selects the most suitable location based on conditions and recent animal activity. Once the boat is anchored and the crew has prepared the cage, guests enter in small groups. Our cage accommodates up to six guests at a time, and rotations are managed so everyone has an opportunity to participate.

Allow approximately four to four and a half hours from arrival until your return, although timing can change with weather, sea conditions and the location of the sharks. A light meal is served when you return.

Is shark cage diving safe?

Safety comes before the sighting and before the photograph. You remain inside a purpose-built cage secured to the boat, and our crew controls when guests enter and leave the water. Every trip begins with a safety briefing, and instructions are repeated at the cage so you know exactly what to do.

Our vessel operates under South African maritime requirements and is internationally Blue Flag accredited. Conditions are assessed by the skipper, and trips may be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled when the weather is not suitable. It can be disappointing when the ocean changes our plans, but we will never place a scheduled departure ahead of safety.

What sharks might I see?

The most commonly encountered sharks in our area are bronze whaler sharks, also known as copper sharks. They are impressive animals that can reach approximately three to three and a half metres and often provide beautiful close passes around the cage.

The wider Dyer Island ecosystem may also surprise you with sevengill cow sharks, stingrays, dolphins, seals, African penguins and a variety of seabirds. Every trip is different because this is a natural environment, not an aquarium.

Will I see a great white shark?

Great white sharks remain present along the South African coastline, but sightings in Gansbaai are now rare and unpredictable. We will never promise a great white sighting simply to secure a booking.
If your only reason for joining is to see a great white, please speak to us before booking so we can give you the most honest and current information available. The bronze whalers and other marine species are remarkable in their own right, and many first-time guests are surprised by just how impressive the full ecosystem is.

Are shark sightings guaranteed?

No responsible wildlife operator can guarantee that a wild animal will arrive. We work with recent sightings, local knowledge and conditions to give each trip the best possible opportunity, but the ocean makes the final decision.

We maintain a high year-round shark sighting rate. If no sharks are seen on your trip, our no-sighting policy provides a free return voucher, subject to the applicable terms and availability.

What if I feel seasick?

The sea around Gansbaai can be lively, even on a beautiful day. If you are prone to motion sickness, or simply do not know yet, we recommend speaking to a pharmacist about a suitable remedy and taking it at the correct time before departure.

Eat something light, avoid arriving dehydrated and dress warmly. Once onboard, fresh air and looking towards the horizon can help. Please tell the crew as soon as you begin feeling unwell so we can assist you.

What should I bring?

• Warm, comfortable clothing and a wind-resistant jacket

• A swimsuit to wear under your wetsuit
• Sun protection, including sunscreen and a hat
• Any personal motion-sickness medication
• A dry change of clothing
• A camera or phone for photographs from the boatWestern Cape weather can change quickly, and it often feels cooler at sea than it does on land. Layers are always a good idea.

Can children and families join?

Families are welcome, and children can enjoy both the cage and viewing experience depending on their age, comfort level and the conditions on the day. Parents or guardians should consider whether the child is comfortable on a boat, able to follow instructions and happy around cold water.

When should I book during my holiday?

Book your shark trip as early in your stay as possible. Weather can affect marine activities, and an early booking gives us room to move you to another suitable day if necessary.

The skipper confirms the final meeting time once the latest forecast and operating conditions have been assessed. A preferred time can be requested, but it cannot always be guaranteed.

Which option is best for a beginner?

Choose the standard cage experience if you are happy to hold your breath for short underwater views and want the classic shark cage diving experience.

Choose the air-supplied option if you would like to breathe normally in the cage and spend longer looking beneath the surface. It is still beginner-friendly and does not require certification.

Choose viewing only if you prefer to stay dry or simply want to experience the wildlife from the boat. You will not be treated as an afterthought; you are part of the full trip.

A final word for nervous first-time guests

You do not have to arrive fearless. You only need to arrive curious.

Ask questions, tell us if you are nervous and take the experience at your own pace. For many guests, the most memorable part is not simply seeing a shark, it is realising that the animal in front of them is not the mindless threat they imagined, but a calm, powerful and important part of a much larger marine ecosystem.
