It is with mixed emotions that we announce the departure of Natasha Kelleher, our wonderful Volunteer Coordinator, who has been an integral part of the SMRI family since the start of 2024. Natasha’s passion, dedication, and energy have elevated our volunteer program to new heights, and her contributions will be greatly missed. We wish Natasha all the best in her future adventures and know that she will continue to make a positive impact wherever she goes.

With Natasha’s departure, an exciting opportunity has opened up at the Shark & Marine Research Institute (SMRI) for the right candidate to step into the role of Volunteer Programme Coordinator.

About the Role

The Volunteer Programme Coordinator will be responsible for managing and enhancing our volunteer program, overseeing the volunteer house, creating engaging social media content, and supporting various research and logistical activities. This is a dynamic role that requires excellent organizational skills, a passion for marine conservation, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.

 Key Responsibilities

– Develop and Manage the Volunteer Program: Take charge of the overall development and management of the volunteer program, ensuring that it meets the needs of both volunteers and the organization.
– Oversee the Volunteer House: Ensure that the volunteer house is clean, well-maintained, and secure, while also handling equipment procurement.
– Create and Manage Social Media Content: Develop and optimize engaging social media content across various platforms to promote our work and attract new volunteers.
– Support Volunteer Training and Research Activities: Assist with the training and supervision of volunteers, as well as support research activities such as tagging and data collection.
– Coordinate Volunteer Activities: Organize and supervise volunteer activities, fieldwork, and social events, ensuring a positive and productive experience for all participants.
– Maintain Research Equipment and Gear: Ensure that all research equipment and volunteer gear are properly maintained and managed.
– Represent SMRI Professionally: Uphold high standards of communication and professionalism, representing SMRI in a positive light at all times.

 Qualifications

– Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in marine biology or a related field.
– Diving Experience: Qualified diver with experience in free diving.
– Legal Requirements: South African citizenship or a valid working permit, as well as a valid driver’s license/PDP.
– Experience: Proven experience in volunteer management or similar roles.
– Skills: Strong social media and content creation skills, excellent organizational and communication abilities, and the ability to multitask and work collaboratively.
– Commitment: A strong commitment to safety and professionalism is essential.
